About this worksheet
Author’s tone is one of the harder analytical skills in grades 4-6 reading comprehension because it depends on word choice, not on what the passage describes. This worksheet keeps the tone set small (six options: formal, playful, urgent, nostalgic, critical, curious) so students can apply the skill carefully rather than guess from a long list.
Section A gives four short original passages, each clearly demonstrating a different tone. Passage A is formal (auditorium pre-event announcement). Passage B is nostalgic (a grandmother’s kitchen, viewed years later). Passage C is urgent (a fire alarm instruction). Passage D is critical (a restaurant review). The four passages are all-purpose enough to spark a class discussion about how tone is created without the topic distracting the analysis.
Section B raises the difficulty: students quote two tone-revealing words from Passage D, explain why one passage can have a single tone but produce more than one reader mood, and rewrite a formal sentence in a playful tone. The reference box at the top of page 1 defines tone, contrasts it with mood, and names the six options. Page 3 is a compact one-column answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and emphasize tone vs mood: tone is what the AUTHOR feels; mood is what the READER feels.
Read each of the four passages aloud once. The contrast between Passage A (formal) and Passage D (critical) makes the tone skill click.
Have students complete Section A independently as the identification core.
Discuss Section B item 2 (tone vs mood) together — this is the conceptual key for the worksheet.
