About this worksheet
Author’s bias is when a writer shows they favor one side instead of staying fair and balanced. Biased writing often uses loaded or emotional words, leaves out the other side, or states opinions as if they were proven facts. This worksheet helps students read critically by separating biased writing from neutral, factual writing.
Section A gives eight sentences (The new park covers ten acres downtown; The foolish new park is a complete waste of money) and asks students to label each biased or neutral. The reference box teaches the idea with a sports-team example, sentences not reused in the items.
Section B asks students to define author’s bias, name a clue that signals bias, rewrite a biased sentence to make it neutral, and explain why noticing bias matters. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill builds toward evaluating arguments and telling fact from opinion.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and highlight the loaded words in the biased example.
Complete Section A independently – have students underline any word that pushes a feeling.
Work Section B item 11 together: rewrite a biased sentence using only neutral, factual words.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.
