About this worksheet

An archetype is a character type that appears again and again in stories across cultures. This worksheet teaches the common archetypes – hero, mentor, villain, trickster, and sidekick – so students can recognize them in what they read.

The reference box and Section A are on page 1. The reference box defines the archetypes with examples. Section A has eight descriptions to name. Section B on page 2 has four written-response questions.

Page 3 is a complete answer key with answers for every item. The worksheet pairs well with the Character Traits and Protagonist and Antagonist worksheets.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box and review the common archetypes.

Name the archetype for each description in Section A on page 1.

Write your responses to the four questions in Section B on page 2.
