About this worksheet
An allegory is a story in which the characters, places, and events stand for deeper ideas, such as a lesson about life or society. On the surface it tells one story; underneath, it teaches a hidden meaning. This worksheet uses an original passage about two friends climbing a mountain, where a pack of stones stands for the burdens people choose to carry.
The reference box and the passage are on page 1. Section A on page 2 gives eight questions about the passage, and students identify what the mountain and the stones stand for. The reference box teaches allegory with a different example, so the questions stay independent of the model.
Section B on page 3 asks students to define an allegory, contrast it with an ordinary story, explain what the stones represent, and plan an allegory of their own. Page 4 is a complete answer key with sample answers. The skill builds on symbolism, theme, and fables.
