What This Lesson Teaches
Students learn what an acrostic poem is, then write their own. Each line of the poem starts with a successive letter of a chosen word – in the worked example, the word is GEOGRAPHY, and each line describes a feature of a region the student has researched.
The lesson is structured as a one-week project. Students choose a region with the teacher’s approval, research it using textbooks and other approved sources, then draft a poem that uses at least three pre-selected geography terms (for example, absolute location) and reflects the human and physical characteristics of the region.
What Students Practice
- Reading a multi-section informational passage describing the human and physical characteristics of a region
- Writing nine lines of a poem, one for each letter of GEOGRAPHY (or a teacher-chosen word)
- Embedding subject-specific vocabulary – at least three pre-selected geography terms must appear in the poem
- Going beyond one-word lines – the lesson explicitly tells students that one word per letter is not acceptable; lines must have a poetic flow
- Researching from multiple sources – textbook, library books, internet research, magazines
How Teachers Use This Worksheet
The lesson is structured as a week-long cross-curricular project, but it can also be compressed into a single class period as a closing activity for a region or topic study.
- Week-long version – Day 1 introduce the form and choose a region; Days 2-3 research; Day 4 draft; Day 5 polish and share
- Single-period version – drop the research step; have students write an acrostic of a familiar topic they have already studied
- Pair the lesson with a regional study, animal study, biography, or holiday so students have content to draw from
- Use the worksheet’s pre-printed letter scaffolding (G is for ___, E is for ___…) as the drafting page
- Display finished poems on a bulletin board organized by region, animal, or theme
- Vary the seed word – use any 5-10 letter word that fits your unit (NUTRITION, OCEAN, FRIENDSHIP)
Common Student Mistakes to Watch For
- Writing one word per letter – the lesson explicitly disallows this; require a phrase or short sentence per line
- Skipping the research step and writing generic content – require the three vocabulary terms in the finished poem
- Choosing a word that is too short for the depth of content – GEOGRAPHY (9 letters) is a sweet spot
- Forgetting that the first letter of each line spells the word – a quick read-down check at the end catches this
