Meet Abby the Ant
Abby is an ant. Abby lives in an apple tree. The story uses short, simple sentences that help young readers practice sight words and follow a familiar character through her day.
Abby was hungry, so Abby ate an apple. “Hmm,” Abby said. Each sentence repeats the same easy pattern, which builds reading confidence and helps emerging readers feel successful.
Abby was full, so she had a nap! The little story ends with Abby napping in her apple tree, giving early readers a satisfying conclusion to a story they can read all by themselves.
How to Use This Lesson
After reading the story together, ask your student or child the simple comprehension questions on the worksheet: What is Abby? What does Abby eat? Where does Abby live? Each question has three picture-style choices.
This worksheet is great for a guided reading group, a one-on-one tutoring session, or for parents working with a beginning reader at home. The repeating sentence pattern (Abby is, Abby was, Abby ate) makes it easy for new readers to track print and predict words.
For extension, have students draw their own picture of Abby in her apple tree, or write their own sentence using the pattern “Abby was _____.” This is a great way to introduce simple narrative writing.
