What’s included

  • A US map with all 50 states numbered, Alaska and Hawaii in boxes
  • Small eastern states numbered beside the map, with a line to each
  • A page of 50 numbered lines
  • An answer key on page 3
  • Color and black & white versions

About these maps

The states are drawn from the U.S. Census Bureau’s state outlines in an equal-area projection, so on the main map each state’s size is true compared with the others. Alaska and Hawaii are drawn in boxes, not in their true places or sizes, and the sheet says so. The regions are the four the Census Bureau uses: the Northeast, Midwest, South and West.

How the numbers work

The states are numbered in reading order, from the top of the map down and west to east. There is no word bank. A state too small to hold its number has it printed on the water beside it, with a line to the state.
