About this worksheet
Finding volume is the first place students see a three-factor multiplication formula. The mechanics are straightforward — multiply length by width by height — but the language (length, width, height; cubic units) and the unit convention (always cubic) trip students up more than the arithmetic does. This worksheet practices both.
A reference box on page 1 names the formula, defines cubic units, and walks one worked example (a 2 x 3 x 4 prism with volume 24 cubic units). Section A asks students to find the volume of six prisms with given dimensions; the dimension triples in Section A are all different from the reference example, and the units include centimeters, inches, and feet so students see that the formula does not change. Section B drills the volume vocabulary (cubic, formula, doubling the height) and Section C closes with three word problems including a reverse-formula item where students must find a missing dimension from a known volume.
The answer key on page 3 shows the full computation for every item, including the cubic-unit label so students don’t drop it. Section C item 15 (find the missing height) is the most challenging item on the worksheet and is worth a short class discussion after.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and walk the class through the 2 x 3 x 4 = 24 example.
Model Section A item 1 (5 x 2 x 4 = 40 cubic cm) so students see the full setup, including the cubic-unit label.
Have students complete Section A items 2-6 independently.
Use Section B as a quick whole-class recall.
Use Section C as partner work; pause after item 15 (reverse formula) for a brief class discussion on how to find a missing dimension.
