About this worksheet

The count-up method is the cleanest way to solve elapsed-time problems without negative numbers or carry-back arithmetic. The student counts from the start time UP to the next whole hour, then counts whole hours up to the end hour, then adds any extra minutes after the end hour. Three small additions instead of one tricky subtraction. The reference box on page 1 walks through 8:45 to 11:20 step by step: 15 minutes to 9:00, then 2 hours to 11:00, then 20 minutes to 11:20 – for a total of 2 hours 35 minutes.

Section A on page 1 has 6 short-answer items in a single-column layout, mixing the three problem types so students have to identify what each item is asking BEFORE they start: items 1-2 are elapsed-time given both endpoints, items 3-4 give the start time and duration and ask for the end time, items 5-6 give the end time and duration and ask for the start time. The numbers stay friendly (clean half-hour and quarter-hour values) so the cognitive load is on identifying the problem type, not on arithmetic.

Page 2 has 4 multi-step word problems with 1.10in work boxes so students can write out the count-up steps. Problems span common school contexts: recess start + duration = end, movie start + end = duration, soccer practice duration + end = start (the reverse-direction case), and a multi-segment study session where the student adds three durations (45 + 15 + 30 = 90 minutes) without dealing with start/end clock times at all.

Page 3 is a complete answer key showing the count-up arithmetic for each Section B problem (e.g. ‘2:15 to 4:05 = 1 h 50 min’) so teachers can show their work alongside students or use the key as a structured discussion. Section A answers are shown as final values only.

How to Use This Lesson

Project page 1 and read the count-up reference example out loud: 8:45 -> 9:00 is 15 minutes; 9:00 -> 11:00 is 2 hours; 11:00 -> 11:20 is 20 minutes. Total 2 hours 35 minutes.

Work Section A item 1 together (6:00 to 7:30) using the count-up method: 6:00 -> 7:00 is 60 min, 7:00 -> 7:30 is 30 min, total 1 h 30 min.

Walk through Section A item 3 (10:00 + 45 min) to show start-plus-duration: count up 45 minutes from 10:00 = 10:45.

Walk through Section A item 5 (4:00 – 1 hour) to show the reverse direction: count BACK 1 hour from 4:00 = 3:00.

Assign the rest of Section A independently; remind students to identify which type the item is (elapsed / end / start) BEFORE writing.

Read Section B item 8 (movie 2:15 to 4:05) together; count up 45 min to 3:00, then 1 hour to 4:00, then 5 min to 4:05 = 1 hour 50 minutes.
