Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
Once students can read times like 3:00 and 8:30, the next step is the quarter hour. This worksheet practices all four key minute-hand positions in the same session (:00, :15, :30, :45) so students learn to recognize the quarter-past and quarter-to positions as confidently as o’clock and half past.
A reference box at the top of page 1 previews the four key minute-hand positions: minute hand on 12 means o’clock, on 3 means quarter past, on 6 means half past, and on 9 means quarter to. One worked example shows that 5:15 reads as ‘quarter past 5.’ The example uses a time deliberately different from every assessed item so the reference teaches the skill without revealing answers.
Page 1 covers reading clock faces and matching clocks to written time phrases. Page 2 asks students to draw the hands on a blank clock face, convert between digital and written form, and solve four short word problems. Page 3 is a complete answer key that lists both the digital time and the matching phrase for every item.
How to Use This Lesson
Warm up by reading the reference box aloud and pointing to each minute-hand position on a classroom clock.
Work Section A together as a class to confirm students can read all four positions.
Use Sections B and C for partner work or guided practice – matching a clock to its phrase and drawing the hands are different skills.
Use Section D (write-two-ways) and Section E (word problems) as independent practice or an exit ticket.
Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check or aide spot-check.
