About this worksheet
This worksheet moves students beyond telling time on the five-minute marks and into reading every individual minute on an analog clock face. Section A presents six clock visuals with the minute hand resting on non-standard positions — 1:08, 4:23, 7:51, 10:14, 3:37, and 8:56 — so students must count minute marks carefully rather than relying on familiar anchor times.
Section B builds a complementary skill: translating natural language time expressions into digital notation. Items include phrasing such as ’11 minutes before noon,’ ‘half past 6 in the morning,’ and ‘quarter past 11 at night,’ requiring students to think flexibly about how the same moment can be described in different ways and then write it correctly with AM or PM. This verbal-to-digital step is a common sticking point assessed on standardized tests.
Section C presents three word problems that call for minute-level arithmetic — finding an arrival time given a countdown, calculating the gap between two times, and computing the length of a bus ride. A reference box at the top of page 1 walks students through the count-by-fives strategy and the colon-plus-leading-zero formatting rules, giving them a reminder they can consult while working independently.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud together, modeling how to count the minute marks by fives and then add any remaining single marks.
Work through one clock in Section A as a class, writing the time in digital format on the board with the correct colon and leading zero.
Have students complete Section A independently, then pair-share answers before moving to Section B.
Discuss the natural-language clues in Section B as a class — especially ‘before,’ ‘past,’ ‘half past,’ and ‘quarter past’ — before students complete the section.
Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check or use it as a teacher reference during small-group review.
