About this worksheet

Tally marks are the simplest counting display: a single vertical stroke for each item, with every fifth stroke crossing the previous four diagonally to form a group of five. The cognitive move is ‘count by 5s for each complete group, then add the leftover single marks’ – the same skip-count-then-add pattern students will use later for skip-counting nickels and reading the minute hand on an analog clock.

The reference box at the top of page 1 explains the rule in plain language (‘every fifth tally crosses the previous four to form a group of five; count by 5s, then add leftover singles’) and shows a 4-row data table titled ‘Favorite pet survey (Mrs. Park’s class)’ with actual drawn tally marks for each pet (Dog 8, Cat 6, Fish 4, Bird 3). The tallies render as real vector line segments rather than text characters, so the diagonal cross-stroke is unambiguous.

Section A on page 1 gives 8 short questions about the favorite-pet table: read four specific counts (Dog 8, Cat 6, Fish 4, Bird 3), identify max (Dog) and min (Bird), compute one difference (Dog minus Bird = 5), and the total across all four rows (8 + 6 + 4 + 3 = 21). The 2-column layout keeps prompts short.

Page 2 introduces a NEW tally table (snacks sold at the school stand Friday: Pretzel 9, Apple 8, Granola 6, Cheese stick 4) so Section B is fresh practice. Section B’s 4 word-problem-style items focus on the same reading skills: which sold the most (Pretzel), how many more (Pretzel minus Cheese stick = 5), which sold the fewest (Cheese stick), and the total across all four rows (27). Page 3 is a complete answer key.

How to Use This Lesson

Demo the tally convention at the board: draw four vertical strokes, then add a diagonal fifth stroke across them. Repeat for a count of 12 (two complete groups of 5 plus 2 leftovers).

Project the page-1 favorite-pet table and walk students through reading the Dog row: count one group of 5, then the three leftover singles – 8 dogs total.

Work Section A item 1 (How many chose dog?) together; ask students to point at each group of 5 first.

Walk through Section A item 7 (Dog minus Bird = 5) since the subtraction across rows is a key tally-table skill.

Assign the rest of Section A independently or with a partner; remind students to skip-count by 5s first, then add the leftover singles.

Turn to page 2 and read the NEW snacks-sold table together; note the larger counts (Pretzel has 9).

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
