About this worksheet
Symmetry is an early-grades geometry topic that bridges visual reasoning and rule-based math: students learn to imagine folding a shape and check whether the two halves match. This worksheet practices the skill across three formats — name-the-count for shapes and letters, fact recall for common shapes (square, equilateral triangle, circle), and short reasoning items.
A reference box on page 1 names the lines-of-symmetry count for several common shapes plus two letters. Section A asks students to count lines of symmetry for eight new shapes and letters — none of which appear in the reference — so students must apply the fold-test idea rather than copy from the reference. Section B drills the reference facts directly. Section C closes with three word problems including one true/false-with-explanation and one ordering item.
The answer key on page 3 gives the lines-of-symmetry count for every item and explains each Section C answer in one short line.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and have students fold a paper square along each of its 4 lines of symmetry.
Model Section A item 1 (letter H) as a class so students see how to find both lines of symmetry.
Have students complete Section A items 2-8 independently.
Use Section B as a quick whole-class recall — the facts directly mirror the reference box.
Use Section C as partner work; item 15 (Ben’s claim) is a common-misconception item worth discussing afterward.
