About this worksheet
Rounding decimals extends the whole-number rounding rule one place to the right: instead of looking at the ones digit, students look at the tenths or hundredths digit. This worksheet builds fluency by separating the two targets in Sections A and B before mixing them in Section C, so students learn to apply the rule wherever the target is named in the prompt.
A reference box at the top of page 1 demonstrates both targets on a single non-reused example, 6.47. Rounded to the nearest whole number it is 6 (tenths digit 4 rounds down); rounded to the nearest tenth it is 6.5 (hundredths digit 7 rounds up). Pairing the two examples reinforces that the procedure is the same, only the place changes.
Page 3 is a complete answer key that lists every rounded value, organized by section in a compact two-column grid for fast student self-check or aide spot-check.
How to Use This Lesson
Warm up by reading the reference box aloud and modeling both rounding targets on a whiteboard.
Use Section A (round to whole) for guided practice; have students underline the tenths digit before they round.
Use Section B (round to tenth) for independent practice; remind students to look at the hundredths digit, not the tenths.
Use Section C (mixed) to check whether students can switch targets fluidly.
Use Section D (word problems) as a 5-minute exit ticket; the third problem rounds a thousandths-place value to the nearest tenth.
