About this worksheet

Classifying quadrilaterals is the first place students meet a real geometric HIERARCHY: a square is also a rectangle is also a parallelogram is also a quadrilateral. The point of this worksheet is to teach students to apply three property questions in order – how many pairs of PARALLEL sides, how many CONGRUENT (equal-length) sides, and how many RIGHT angles – and then give the MOST specific name that fits. The hierarchy rule pays off in middle school when students reason about which properties transfer up the chain (a property that holds for parallelograms automatically holds for rectangles, rhombuses, and squares).

The reference box at the top of page 1 teaches the three-question method and the hierarchy with one worked example using a KITE – a quadrilateral students may have seen but that does NOT match any of the named-shape descriptions in Section A. A kite has two pairs of congruent sides that meet at adjacent vertices, no parallel sides, and (typically) no right angles, so the three-question method places it OUTSIDE the parallelogram/trapezoid family entirely. Working through a kite up front gives students a concrete demonstration that the method works even when the answer isn’t one of the familiar five names.

Section A on page 1 has 8 property-to-name items in a single-column layout (some descriptions run 12+ words so the wider cell width is needed). Each item lists a set of properties; students write the most specific quadrilateral that matches. Two items have the SAME answer (rectangle for items 1 and 7; rhombus for items 3 and 8) but with different property orderings, so students cannot pattern-match – they must apply the criteria. Section B on page 2 has 6 short fact fill-ins about quadrilateral counts (sides, vertices, right angles, parallel-side pairs) that reinforce the vocabulary.

Section C on page 2 has 3 word problems with work boxes (1.10in) that test reasoning rather than property-counting: ‘a square is also a rectangle, true?’ (yes), ‘can a shape with 1 parallel-side pair be a parallelogram?’ (no, parallelogram needs 2), and a hierarchy-sort question (square -> rectangle -> parallelogram -> quadrilateral). Page 3 is a complete answer key, with Section C explanations included so teachers can use the key as a discussion guide.

How to Use This Lesson

Project the page-1 reference box and read the three-question method out loud: parallel sides, congruent sides, right angles.

Walk through the KITE worked example together; show how 0 parallel + 2 congruent + 0 right rules out parallelogram, rectangle, rhombus, square, and trapezoid.

Work Section A item 1 (4 right angles + opposite sides equal + NOT all sides equal) together; ask which named shape fits exactly (rectangle, not square).

Walk through Section A item 4 (exactly 1 pair of parallel sides) since the trapezoid criterion is the most often confused.

Assign the rest of Section A independently or with a partner; remind students to apply ALL three questions before writing the name.

Use Section C item 17 (sort from most-specific to least-specific) to surface the hierarchy chain explicitly.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
