Polygon Classification Worksheet
Free printable polygon-classification worksheet for grades 3-4. Students name polygons by side count (triangle, quadrilateral, pentagon, hexagon, octagon) and classify triangles by side length (equilateral, isosceles, scalene) and quadrilaterals by their defining properties (square, rectangle, rhombus, trapezoid). Includes a complete answer key.

About this worksheet
Most students learn that a triangle has three sides long before they meet the family of polygons that goes with it. This worksheet moves them past triangle and square into the full vocabulary of polygons: pentagon, hexagon, octagon, and the special subclasses of triangle and quadrilateral that come up across the elementary curriculum.
A reference box on page 1 lists each polygon by its side count and names the three triangle subtypes (equilateral, isosceles, scalene) plus the four common special quadrilaterals (square, rectangle, rhombus, trapezoid). Section A asks students to name each polygon from a short description. Section B drills the side-count facts as quick fill-in items. Section C closes with three word problems including one that asks students to name a heptagon (7 sides) — a polygon the reference does NOT cover, so students must reason from the pattern.
The answer key on page 3 lists the correct name for every item and shows the reasoning for each word problem in one line each.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud; have students trace the example shapes with a finger as they go.
Model Section A items 1-2 so students see how to map a description to a polygon name.
Have students complete Section A items 3-8 independently.
Use Section B as a quick whole-class recall — chorus the side count for each polygon name.
Use Section C as partner work; item 17 (heptagon) is intentionally beyond the reference and rewards careful pattern-noticing.
