Place Value Worksheets

Place Value Worksheets for Teachers

Printable worksheets and lesson plans for ones, tens, and hundreds; reading and writing numbers; expanded form; and comparing numbers. Grades 1-4.

What Students Practice

Place value is the foundation of number sense. These worksheets and lessons help students see how digit position determines value, and how that understanding makes comparing, ordering, and computing with whole numbers possible.

Ones, Tens, and Hundreds

Identify the value of each digit in two- and three-digit numbers. Students learn that the same digit means a different amount depending on which column it sits in.

Reading and Writing Numbers

Translate between standard form, word form, and number names. Students practice writing numbers they hear and reading numbers in classroom and real-world contexts.

Expanded Form

Break a number apart by place value (e.g., 347 = 300 + 40 + 7). Expanded form makes the structure of a number visible and prepares students for column addition and subtraction.

Comparing Numbers

Use greater than, less than, and equal to symbols to compare whole numbers. Students learn to start at the largest place value and work right when comparing multi-digit numbers.

Number Sequences

Find missing numbers in a counting pattern. Sequence work builds fluency with the number line and reinforces how place value drives counting forward and backward.

Larger Place Value

Extend place value understanding into thousands, ten-thousands, and beyond. Students apply the same column logic to larger numbers as they progress through grades 3-4.

Using Place Value Worksheets in Class

Place value is one of the most important concepts in elementary math. A few teaching strategies that consistently work with these worksheets:

  • Start with concrete materials (base-ten blocks or stacked coins) before moving to worksheets – the visual model anchors the abstract notation
  • Have students read numbers aloud as they work – hearing ‘three hundred forty-seven’ while seeing 347 reinforces both forms
  • Teach the equal sign as ‘is the same as’ before introducing the greater than and less than symbols
  • When comparing multi-digit numbers, model lining them up by place value – many student errors come from comparing the leftmost digits without checking lengths
  • Use expanded form practice as a bridge to column addition and subtraction – students who understand 347 = 300 + 40 + 7 understand carrying and borrowing more easily
  • Mix problem types within a single worksheet – alternating identify-the-place, expanded-form, and compare problems prevents students from going on autopilot
