About this worksheet
Place value to thousands is a foundational grade 3-4 standard. This worksheet practices the same underlying skill in six formats – value identification, expanded form, standard form, place-name identification, comparison, and ordering – so place-value understanding transfers across the question types students see on assessments.
A reference box at the top of page 1 shows a place chart for the example number 3,729 and demonstrates expanded form (3,000 + 700 + 20 + 9), the value of the 7 (700), and the value of the 2 (20). The example deliberately uses a number and component values different from every assessed item so the reference teaches the skill without revealing answers.
Page 3 is a complete answer key that shows the place and value for each Section A item and a short place-value reason for each compare item, which makes it easy for students or aides to spot-check work.
How to Use This Lesson
Warm up by reading the reference box aloud and pointing to each column of the place chart.
Use Sections A-C on page 1 as guided practice or a 10-minute fluency block.
Use Section D as a quick warm-up the next day to re-anchor the place names.
Use Sections E and F as independent practice or a 5-minute exit ticket.
Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check or aide spot-check.
