About this worksheet
Perimeter and area are the first two measurement formulas most third- and fourth-graders learn, and they are also the first two that students reliably confuse. This worksheet practices both side by side: Section A asks only for perimeter, Section B asks only for area, Section C asks for both at once from a small dimensions table, and Sections D and E push students past one-step computation into missing-side reasoning and short word problems.
The top of page 1 previews both formulas – perimeter as 2 x (length + width) and area as length x width – and walks through one small worked example (a 6 ft by 4 ft rectangle, perimeter 20 ft, area 24 sq ft). The example dimensions, perimeter, and area are deliberately different from every assessed item so the reference teaches the formula without revealing answers.
All side lengths are whole numbers between 1 and 25. Units rotate between centimeters, meters, inches, and feet so students see the formulas apply to any unit; each problem specifies its own unit and the answer key includes the unit on every line. Page 3 is a complete answer key that shows the operation line for every item.
How to Use This Lesson
Warm up by reading the reference box aloud and walking through the 6 ft by 4 ft example on the board.
Use Section A as a perimeter-only warm-up and Section B as an area-only warm-up.
Use Section C as guided practice when students are ready to compute both measurements from a table.
Use Section D for partner work – missing-side problems benefit from talking through the inverse step.
Use Section E (word problems) as a 5-minute exit ticket.
Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check or aide spot-check.
