Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

When an expression has more than one operation, the answer depends on the order you solve in. The rule is: parentheses first, then multiplication and division from left to right, then addition and subtraction from left to right – often remembered as PEMDAS. This worksheet gives students direct practice evaluating expressions correctly.

Section A gives eight expressions mixing addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, and parentheses (5 + 2 x 3; (4 + 6) x 2; 20 / (2 + 3)). Students evaluate each using the correct order. The reference box teaches the rule with a 7 + 9 x 8 example and a parentheses example whose numbers are not reused in any item.

Section B is short-answer with shown steps. Students state the order, explain why multiplication comes before addition, evaluate an expression with parentheses step by step, and judge which of two students solved correctly. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill is essential for algebra readiness.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and walk through 7 + 9 x 8 versus (7 + 9) x 8.

Complete Section A independently – have students scan for parentheses and multiplication first.

Work Section B item 3 together: 8 + (6 – 2) x 3 = 8 + 4 x 3 = 8 + 12 = 20.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Multi-Step Word Problems Worksheet or the Multi-Digit Multiplication Worksheet for a computation mini-unit.
