Lesson Overview
About this worksheet
This worksheet turns the order of operations with parentheses into a picture. Every square in the grid holds a problem, and the answer decides the color of that square. The grid mixes 71 different problems, and no problem appears more than twice. Every square is a trap for working straight from left to right or skipping the parentheses: that answer is never the right color. When all 72 squares are colored, the picture shows a kite with red, yellow, green and orange quarters and green bows on its tail, so a student can see for themselves whether the work went right.
Page 2 checks the same skill in a different form: Section B has ten problems to finish, and Section C has three story problems to solve in a box. Page 3 is the answer key: the finished picture beside the color key, and every answer to Sections B and C.
It comes in two editions: a full-color PDF and a low-ink black-and-white PDF for everyday copying. In the black-and-white key every square also shows the first letter of its color.
How to Use This Lesson
Color each box in the color key first, or read the key together.
Solve every problem in the grid, working across one row at a time.
Color each square with the color its answer points to in the key.
Finish Sections B and C on page 2, then check every section against page 3.
