About this worksheet
One more and one less is a counting idea before it is an arithmetic one: the answer is the next number you would say, or the one just before. This sheet starts with pictures so the step is visible, then asks for it in numbers alone.
Section A on page 1 shows a group with one more picture added, or one crossed out, and asks how many there are now. Sections B and C on page 2 drop the pictures and ask for one more and one less of numbers up to twenty. Page 3 is the answer key.
The reference box makes the point that matters most at this age: a student does not have to count from one again. Taking a single step forward or back from a number they already know is the whole skill.
It comes in two editions: a full-color PDF and a low-ink black-and-white PDF for everyday copying, both with the same answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box and count up and back from one number together.
Work Section A with the pictures, skipping any that is crossed out.
Cover the pictures and complete Sections B and C from the numbers alone.
