About this worksheet
Surface-area formulas are easy to apply and easy to apply blindly. A net is the antidote: unfold the solid, and every face is there to be counted and measured. This worksheet builds that picture before any formula is used.
Four nets are drawn on page one and lettered A through D. Section A asks which net folds into which solid and how many shapes each one is made from, including one question about the two nets that are made of the same number of shapes. Section B asks students to explain how they can still tell those two apart, and why a net is a useful way to find surface area.
Each net is drawn from the solid it belongs to, and the drawing itself is checked to put the right number of faces on the page. Page three is a complete answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Print the worksheet. Page one carries the four nets and Section A.
Ask students to name the flat shapes in each net before answering.
Have students complete Section A, then Section B in writing.
Grade with the answer key on page three.
