Identifying Monomials and Applying the Product Rule

A monomial is a single term with variables and exponents, such as 14x³. To multiply monomials, multiply the coefficients and add the exponents of matching bases: (3x²)(4x³) = 12x⁵. The lesson introduces this product rule and applies it to increasingly complex monomials.

The six-page lesson walks through monomial identification and multiplication with worked examples. Students complete 20 practice problems and check their work using the answer key on page 6.

How to Use This Lesson

1. Define monomials and review exponent notation (pages 1–2). Connect to students’ prior work with exponents.

2. Introduce the product rule and multiply monomials together (pages 3–4). Progress from single-variable to multi-variable examples.

3. Assign the 20 practice problems (page 5) independently. Review answers using the key on page 6.
