Common Student Mistakes to Watch For

• Adding instead of multiplying – some students carry over the addition method (separate whole and fraction) into multiplication. Anchor on the rule: multiplying mixed numbers requires converting to improper fractions first
• Forgetting the same denominator in the conversion step – students multiply and add correctly, then change the denominator. Have them write each conversion step explicitly the first few times
• Not simplifying the final answer or leaving an improper fraction when a mixed number is requested
• Story problem misreads – in the recipe-scaling problem, students may forget to multiply the per-pie quantity by the number of pies
