About this worksheet
Multiplying a fraction by a whole number is the gateway to fraction multiplication in grade 5. The procedure is simple – multiply the whole number times the numerator, keep the denominator – but students need lots of repetitions to internalize that the denominator does NOT change. This worksheet provides that fluency in four short sections.
Section A is a fraction-bar warm-up at denominators 3, 6, 10, and 8. Students identify the fraction each bar shows, re-anchoring the visual model before multiplying. Section B starts with multiplication problems at 2 and 3 times small-denominator fractions (3-8); many products are improper fractions that students convert to mixed numbers, which is the central skill of the standard. Section C deepens to multipliers 4-7 and denominators 9-12.
Section D is three word problems applying n times a/b to milk cartons, lap distances, and recipe scaling. The reference box at the top of page 1 teaches the procedure with a single worked example (2 x 4/7 = 8/7 = 1 1/7) that walks all the way through the improper-to-mixed-number conversion students will need on several assessed items. Denominator 7 is not used by any assessed item, keeping the worksheet reference-independent. Page 3 is a compact answer key that includes mixed-number and simplified equivalents in parentheses where the product converts or reduces.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box; have students articulate why the denominator does not change.
Do Section A together; pause to discuss why 2/6 simplifies to 1/3 before students move on.
Section B introduces improper-fraction results; review the first improper-fraction problem (2 x 2/3 = 4/3 = 1 1/3) as a class so students see the mixed-number conversion.
Section C is independent practice with larger denominators.
Section D word problems can be done in pairs; share strategies for converting improper fractions to mixed numbers in context.
