Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Multiplying by 10, 100, and 1000 is the bridge between multiplication facts and multi-digit multiplication, and it is the foundation for scientific notation and decimal place-value reasoning later. This worksheet practices the skill in horizontal, missing-number, and word-problem formats.

A reference box at the top of page 1 explains why the shortcut works: multiplying by 10 shifts every digit one place to the left, by 100 shifts two places, and by 1000 shifts three places. The worked example, 47 x 100 = 4,700, is not reused in any assessed item.

Page 3 is a complete answer key that shows the product for every item with proper place-value comma formatting, organized by section for fast student self-check or aide spot-check.

How to Use This Lesson

Warm up by reading the reference box aloud and modeling the place-value shift on the whiteboard.

Use Section A (mixed x10/x100/x1000) for independent practice; have students name the number of zeros before writing the product.

Use Section B (missing factor or product) for guided pair-share; ask students which place-value shift produced the answer.

Use Section C for additional practice across larger factors.

Use Section D (word problems) as a 5-minute exit ticket.

Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check or aide spot-check.
