A 3-page worksheet for grades 2-3 that introduces multiplication through the array model. About this worksheet
Multiplication arrays are the cleanest visual model for early multiplication: a grid of equal rows and equal columns turns repeated addition into a single multiplication fact. Once a student sees that 3 rows of 4 dots is the same as 3 + 3 + 3 + 3 OR 4 + 4 + 4, the commutative property follows naturally – the same array shows 3 x 4 and 4 x 3.
Section A shows four arrays printed as grids of black dots (2 x 4, 4 x 5, 3 x 5, and 5 x 2). Students write the multiplication fact each one shows. Section B switches to a text-based description (“4 rows of 3”, “2 rows of 6”, etc.) and asks students to write the matching multiplication fact – building the bridge between the visual and the verbal forms of the same model.
Section C is three word problems where students DRAW their own arrays in the work box and write the multiplication fact: a classroom of desks, cookies on a tray, and a garden of tomato plants. The reference box at the top of page 1 teaches the array model with a single worked example (3 rows x 3 columns = 9) – a factor pair that does NOT appear in any assessed item in either order, keeping the worksheet reference-independent. Page 3 is a compact answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box; have a student count the dots in the example array to verify 3 x 3 = 9.
Do Section A together; emphasize that rows are horizontal and columns are vertical.
Section B is independent practice; circulate to catch students who reverse the rows-and-columns order.
For Section C, students draw their own array in each work box before writing the fact – encourage neat equal rows.
Wrap with a class discussion: which Section A array could also show 4 x 5 instead of 5 x 4 (item 2)? Tie to the commutative property.
