Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Word problems are where multiplication and division fluency turns into real-world reasoning. This worksheet builds the habit of slowing down to find the numbers, decide the operation, and check the answer. The contexts are deliberately simple so the cognitive work is on the reasoning, not on parsing complicated stories.

A reference box at the top of page 1 teaches the clue-language strategy. Phrases like ‘in all’, ‘total’, ‘altogether’, and ‘groups of’ usually signal multiplication; phrases like ‘share equally’, ‘split’, ‘how many in each’, and ‘how many groups’ usually signal division. The worked example, 6 × 8 = 48 crayons, is not reused in any assessed problem.

Page 3 is a complete answer key that shows the operation line and the answer for every item, organized by section in a compact two-column grid for fast student self-check or aide spot-check.

How to Use This Lesson

Warm up by reading the reference box aloud and modeling the clue-language strategy on the whiteboard.

Use Section A for guided pair-share; ask students to underline the clue phrase before they choose an operation.

Use Section B for independent practice; students should write the operation line first, then the answer with the unit.

Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check or aide spot-check.

Pair with Multiplication Facts 6-12 Worksheet or Division Facts Worksheet for fluency practice on the underlying facts.
