About this worksheet
Multi-step word problems are the bridge between single-operation fluency and real-world problem solving. They require students to identify the hidden sub-problem, solve it first, then use the result to solve the outer problem. This worksheet practices that skill across a deliberate mix of contexts and operations.
A reference box at the top of page 1 walks through a non-reused two-step example: a store sold 24 packs of pencils on Monday and 19 packs on Tuesday, with 12 pencils per pack, so (24 + 19) × 12 = 516 pencils. The example shows both steps written out so students learn to label and check their work.
Problem 7 (“smallest number of buses for 124 students with 28 seats per bus”) and problem 8 (“full bags of cookies after a division with remainder”) deliberately test the reasoning students need to apply when division produces a remainder. Both require interpreting the remainder in context, not just computing it.
Page 3 is a complete answer key that shows both steps for every problem, organized by section in a compact two-column grid for fast student self-check or aide spot-check.
How to Use This Lesson
Warm up by reading the reference box aloud and modeling the two-step example on the whiteboard with both steps clearly labeled.
Use Section A for guided practice; ask students to identify the inner sub-problem before they begin solving.
Use Section B for independent practice; students must write both steps and the unit.
Pay special attention to problems 7 and 8, which require interpreting a division remainder in context.
Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check or aide spot-check.
