About this worksheet
Multi-digit multiplication is the bridge between single-digit fact recall and long-number arithmetic. Students learn to multiply the ONES place first, then the TENS place, then ADD the partial products with the place values lined up correctly. This is the skill that breaks down in 4th and 5th grade most often as a place-value alignment error – so the worksheet builds discipline by warming up with two-digit × one-digit problems before the two-digit × two-digit work begins.
The reference box at the top of page 1 walks students through the partial-products method using a generic worked example: 36 × 25. Step 1 multiplies by the ones place (36 × 5 = 180). Step 2 multiplies by the tens place (36 × 20 = 720). Step 3 adds the partial products lined up by place value (180 + 720 = 900). The example pair (36, 25) deliberately appears in NO Section A, B, or C problem, so students see the algorithm on independent numbers.
Section A on page 1 gives students 12 two-digit-by-one-digit warmup problems in a 4-column grid. The dividends and multipliers cover the small-number families (×2 through ×9) so students reactivate their facts before the harder two-digit-by-two-digit work. Section B on page 2 presents 9 two-digit × two-digit problems in vertical layout (3 columns × 3 rows), drawn with the standard-algorithm operand stack so students can practice place-value alignment in the form they will use long-term.
Section C on page 2 has 3 word problems with 0.85-inch work boxes for showing partial products and sums. The contexts test the multiplication-as-array structure (24 boxes × 18 books = total books, 32 rows × 24 seats = total seats) and a multiplication-as-rate problem (65 minutes/day × 14 days = total minutes). Page 3 is a complete answer key with every Section A and Section B product computed and Section C shown as multiplication-equals-product sentences.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and walk students through the 36 × 25 = 900 example, emphasizing the lining-up rule for adding partial products.
Work Section A item 1 (23 × 4 = 92) together; ask students how they decided which place to multiply first.
Assign the rest of Section A independently or with a partner; remind students to check that EVERY product makes sense (a two-digit × one-digit product is at most three digits).
Turn to page 2 and walk through Section B item 13 (23 × 14) as a class – this is the cleanest first two-digit × two-digit problem.
Use Section C item 22 (24 × 18 books) for a structured discussion; ask students to estimate first (25 × 18 = 450) before computing.
Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
