About this worksheet
Money word problems give students a meaningful, real-world context for practicing all four operations with decimal amounts. This worksheet sequences 13 problems across three sections, moving from straightforward one-step transactions in Section A to two-step problems in Section B to multi-step budget and comparison scenarios in Section C. A reference box on page 1 reviews key clue words for each operation and models the problem-solving process with an addition example that does not reappear as an assessed item.
Section A builds confidence with five problems covering amounts up to $1.25 — the coin-based range students encounter in lower elementary. Section B adds complexity with five multi-step problems involving dollar amounts up to $21.25, including scenarios that require two separate operations (buying and receiving change, or saving over two weeks toward a goal). Section C presents three challenge problems including a multi-item purchase, equal splitting, and unit-price comparison — skills commonly tested on state math assessments.
The answer key on page 4 shows the equation or equations needed for each problem along with the labeled final answer, organized by section. Teachers can use it for spot-checking student work, grading, or projecting during class discussion of problem-solving strategies.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box together and ask students to volunteer additional clue words for each operation before beginning.
Complete Section A as a whole class or in pairs to build shared vocabulary for labeling answers (cents vs. dollars).
Have students attempt Section B independently; pause to discuss problems 8 and 10 which require two distinct operations.
Use Section C as a small-group or partner challenge; encourage students to write out each step of their work before computing the final answer.
Review the answer key on page 4 as a class, focusing on the equation notation so students see how to record multi-step money solutions.
