About this worksheet
Reading a ruler is one of the first hands-on measurement skills students encounter. This worksheet builds the skill on the page, using a printed ruler graphic for each item so every student gets the same measurement target regardless of which physical ruler is at hand. A reference box on page 1 walks through the procedure (line up at zero, read where the other end stops) and names the 1/4 inch marks students will see across the assessed items.
Section A presents six measurement items, three per page. Each item shows a line segment positioned above a 0–6 inch ruler; students write the length of the segment in inches. Segment lengths cover whole-inch reads (2, 5, 6 inches) and mixed-fraction reads (1 1/2, 3 1/4, 4 3/4 inches), giving each student practice with both easy and quarter-inch reads. Section B then steps back from the ruler to test the underlying facts — how many inches in a foot, what a 1/4 inch is, and so on. Section C closes with three short word problems applying length to real comparisons.
The answer key on page 4 uses standard mixed-number notation (3 1/4 inches) and shows the equation for each word problem. Teachers can use it for spot-checking student work or for a teacher-led page 1 discussion before students move on to Sections B and C independently.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box together and have students trace the example segment on their own ruler if one is available.
Complete Section A items 1–3 as a class to model how to read the segment endpoint on the printed ruler.
Have students complete Section A items 4–6 independently or in pairs.
Discuss Section B as a class — these conversion facts are best reinforced with quick whole-class recall.
Use Section C as an exit ticket; review the answer key on page 4 to model how to write a labeled answer (“2 inches longer”, not just “2”).
