About this worksheet

Distinguishing a line from a ray from a line segment is the gateway vocabulary for almost everything that comes later in middle-school geometry — polygon sides, parallel and perpendicular lines, angles formed between intersecting rays. This worksheet teaches the distinction through visual identification and fact recall. A reference box on page 1 defines a point, line, ray, and line segment, and shows the standard notation each uses: arrowheads for a line, a dot-and-arrow for a ray, dots at both ends for a segment.

Section A presents six labeled figures and asks students to name each as a line, ray, or line segment. Each figure carries two named points (A and B, C and D, and so on); the dots and arrowheads tell students whether the figure has one endpoint, two endpoints, or none. Section B drills the underlying facts: which figure has two endpoints, what each kind of figure goes on doing, how points are named. Section C closes with three short word problems including one that requires students to count endpoints across all three figure types.

The answer key on page 3 uses the standard naming convention (e.g., “ray RS”) and shows the arithmetic for the endpoint-counting problem. Teachers can use the AK for spot-checking or for a teacher-led discussion of how the visual notation maps to the definition.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box together; draw each figure on the board so students see the notation alongside the definition.

Model Section A items 1 and 2 as a class — segment vs. ray is the most common mix-up in this skill.

Have students complete Section A items 3–6 independently or in pairs.

Discuss Section B as a quick whole-class recall.

Use Section C as a small-group activity; review item 17 (endpoint count) as a class to consolidate the 2 + 1 + 0 = 3 pattern.
