About this worksheet

Line plots (also called dot plots) are a friendly first display of frequency data: students count stacked X marks above each labeled tick on a number line. The skill builds toward histograms and frequency tables later but stays concrete in grades 3-5 – if you can count the Xs above a label, you can read the line plot. This worksheet isolates the read-the-line-plot move on two short, low-stakes data sets so students can practice the cognitive transfer before tackling longer multi-display problems.

The reference box at the top of page 1 IS the data: a line plot titled ‘How many siblings do you have?’ with five labeled ticks (0, 1, 2, 3, 4) and X marks stacked above each in counts of 3, 8, 5, 2, 2. The title sits above the number line; an axis label ‘number of siblings’ sits below. The plot uses only thin black rules and bold black X marks so it stays low-ink and prints cleanly in black and white.

Section A on page 1 gives students 8 short questions about the siblings line plot: count the Xs above specific ticks, identify the most-common value, count students with at least N siblings (a multi-tick sum), compute the total surveyed (sum of all stacks), find the range (max – min), and count students with FEWER than N siblings. The 2-column layout keeps each prompt short and the answer line wide enough for a single number or short phrase.

Page 2 introduces a NEW line plot (pencil lengths in centimeters, 6 ticks from 6 to 11 cm) so Section B is fresh practice with a new context (length measurement, not survey data). Section B’s 6 short-response items take students a step further: count above a single tick, find the longest pencil (label-not-just-count), count above multiple ticks (‘MORE than 9 cm long’), compute totals, find the longest-minus-shortest difference, and answer a what-if question (if 2 more 8-cm pencils were added). Page 3 is a complete answer key with both Section A and Section B answers worked out.

How to Use This Lesson

Project the page-1 line plot and walk students through counting the X stack above the ‘1’ tick.

Work Section A item 1 (How many students have 1 sibling) together; ask students how they decided.

Assign the rest of Section A independently or with a partner; remind students to COUNT the Xs rather than guess.

Turn to page 2 and read the NEW pencil-lengths plot together; note that the values are LENGTHS in cm (not counts), which is a key reading shift.

Use Section B item 13 (longest minus shortest) as a structured discussion of the range/difference move.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or aide spot-check.
