Identifying and Extending Number Patterns
A pattern is a sequence of numbers or shapes that follows a consistent rule. To work with a pattern, first identify the rule — what operation connects each term to the next. Then apply the rule to extend the pattern or find missing terms. The lesson introduces these concepts with visual and numeric examples.
The seven-page lesson walks through pattern identification, rule-writing, and extension with worked examples. Students complete 20 practice problems identifying and extending patterns, then check their work using the answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
1. Introduce the concept of a pattern and pattern rules (pages 1–2). Use number sequences on the board.
2. Practice identifying rules and extending patterns together (pages 3–5). Include both arithmetic and geometric examples.
3. Assign the 20 practice problems (page 6) independently. Review answers using the key on page 7.
