About this worksheet

Identifying coins is one of the very first applied-math skills students need outside the classroom. Before they can make change, count their allowance, or buy a snack, they need to recognize each coin and know its value. This worksheet sequences practice from single-coin identification to counting small groups, then closes with three real-world word problems.

The reference box on page 1 lists the four most common US coins with their values: penny (1 cent), nickel (5 cents), dime (10 cents), and quarter (25 cents). The half-dollar (50 cents) is mentioned as a less common but recognizable coin. Students also see that five pennies have the same total value as one nickel, which previews the counting work in Section B.

Each coin is drawn in the worksheet as a uniform-sized labeled circle. In Section A, where the task is to recall the value, the circle shows only the coin name (e.g. ‘quarter’) with no cent value printed inside; the student must supply the value from memory. In Section B, where the task is to add multiple coins, the circles show the value in cents as the dominant label (e.g. ’25c’) with the coin name below, so students can focus on the addition. Uniform circle sizing is a deliberate convention because real coin diameters can mislead (a dime is physically smaller than a penny); identification stays driven by the label, not by visual size.

Section A presents six single-coin items; students write the value of the coin shown. Two coins are intentionally repeated across the six items so students see the same coin in different positions. Section B presents six rows of 2-4 coins each; students total the values. Sums stay at or below 50 cents to keep the arithmetic accessible for first and second graders. Section C closes with three word problems set in everyday contexts; the third problem catches a common error where students assume different coin combinations must have different totals.

The answer key on page 4 lists every assessed item in section order. Section B and C answers show the addition equation in full so students or aides can spot-check the procedure, not just the final number.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud as a whole-class warm-up. If you have a real coin set, hold up each coin as you say its value.

Have students complete Section A independently as a 3-minute fluency check; review answers together before moving on.

Use Section B for guided practice in pairs – have one student state the values aloud while the other adds them.

Assign Section C as a homework or exit-ticket; problem 15 is a teachable equivalence moment when students discover Sophie and Jordan have the same total.

Use the answer key on page 4 for student self-check, small-group review, or aide spot-check.
