About this worksheet
Identifying 2D shapes is a foundational geometry goal for grades 1 and 2. Students who can name a shape from a picture don’t always recognize it from a property description, a side-count, or a real-world clue. This worksheet practices the same nine shapes across five different formats so identification is durable.
A short reference box at the top of page 1 teaches the core rule – for any closed straight-sided shape, the number of sides equals the number of vertices – and lists the side count for each shape. The small example triangle in the reference is drawn differently from every assessed triangle on the worksheet, so the reference teaches the rule without revealing an answer.
Page 3 is a complete answer key that includes the grid positions of every shape that should be circled on the Section D items, which makes it easy for students or aides to spot-check work.
How to Use This Lesson
Warm up by reading the reference box aloud and tracing the sides and vertices of the example triangle in the air.
Use Section A as a quick whole-class warm-up – chorus each shape name before students write it.
