Lesson Overview
Measuring Line Segments
A line segment is the part of a line between two endpoints. Unlike a line, a segment has a definite length that can be measured. Students learn to use a ruler to measure segments in both customary (inches) and metric (centimeters) units, reading the measurement to the nearest fraction of an inch or centimeter.
This seven-page lesson begins with a review of geometry vocabulary from the introductory lesson, then focuses on line segment measurement. Students measure 7 segments of varying lengths using a ruler, recording answers in mixed units. The answer key provides exact measurements for all 7 problems.
How to Use This Lesson
1. Review geometry vocabulary from the prior lesson (pages 1–2). Confirm students understand points, lines, and basic notation.
2. Introduce line segment properties and measurement technique (pages 3–5). Demonstrate ruler use with both inch and centimeter sides.
3. Assign the 7 measurement problems (pages 6–7) independently. Review answers using the key on page 7.
