About this worksheet
A first fractions lesson has to do three things at once: name the part, name the whole, and notice when a partition is not into equal parts. This worksheet practices all three with 30 mixed items so students don’t just learn numerator-over-denominator without understanding fair shares.
The page-1 reference box defines numerator and denominator and grounds both in a flag-with-3-equal-stripes example. The example uses a context and a fraction not used in any assessed item, so the reference teaches the vocabulary without revealing answers. The fair-shares rule appears in bold so it isn’t missed.
Page 1 has students name the shaded fraction, then the unshaded fraction to flip the perspective. Page 2 asks students to shade a given fraction, judge fair shares, and solve four short story items. The page 3 answer key gives a fraction and a one-clause reason for every fair-shares item.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box together and sketch the flag example on the board (a rectangle with 3 equal vertical stripes).
Use Section A and B as a guided-practice pair (same shapes, two angles).
Do Section D (fair shares) as a whole-class discussion.
Use Section E (story items) for paired or independent work.
Move students to Comparing Fractions or Equivalent Fractions when this is firm.
