About this worksheet
Comparing fractions is more than picking the bigger number on the bottom. This worksheet trains three durable strategies (same-denominator, same-numerator, and benchmark to 1/2) and then mixes them so students have to decide which strategy fits each pair. Denominators stay inside the friendly range 2-12, with no improper fractions and no decimals.
A reference box at the top of page 1 previews each of the three strategies with one example: 2/9 vs 7/9, 3/5 vs 3/8, and 2/7 vs 1/2. The reference fractions are deliberately chosen so they do not appear in any assessed item, which means the reference teaches the strategy without revealing answers anywhere on the worksheet.
Page 3 is a complete answer key that shows the common-denominator step for each mixed comparison and the operation line for every word problem, which makes student self-check and aide spot-check fast.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud and model each of the three strategies on the example shown.
Use Section A as a warm-up – students should finish it in under 3 minutes once they recognize ‘same bottom, compare tops’.
Use Section B to introduce the harder strategy (‘same top, compare bottoms – smaller bottom wins’); pair-share works well here.
Use Section C as a mini-quiz on the benchmark 1/2 – students can self-check using ‘top doubled vs bottom’.
Use Section D and the ordering sets in Section E for guided practice or homework; encourage a quick bar-model sketch when students get stuck.
Use Section F (word problems) as a 5-minute exit ticket.
Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check or aide spot-check.
