About this practice packet
Number lines are the bridge between the fraction-as-part-of-a-whole intuition that students build in second and third grade and the fraction-as-a-number understanding they need for the rest of elementary math. This packet sequences practice from identifying labeled points to plotting named fractions to comparing two fractions side-by-side, then closes with three word problems that ask students to reason about positions on a number line in plain English.
The reference box on page 1 introduces the count-the-jumps method using two examples: 1/3 on a 0-to-1 number line divided into thirds, and 5/3 on a 0-to-2 number line. Students learn to read the denominator as ‘how many equal parts each whole is divided into’ and the numerator as ‘how many parts to count from the left.’ The same procedure scales from halves through eighths and from a 0-to-1 line to a 0-to-2 line.
Section A presents four 0-to-1 number lines with a dot already plotted; students name the fraction. Section B extends to 0-to-2 number lines so students see improper fractions like 5/4 and 7/4 as positions on a line that sit between 1 and 2. Section C reverses the task: the line is blank with tick marks at the named denominator, and students plot a dot at the named fraction. Section D is a 12-item comparison set that exercises equivalent fractions (1/3 vs 2/6, 1/2 vs 4/8), within-half-or-above-half reasoning (2/3 vs 1/2, 3/4 vs 5/8), and improper-fraction comparisons that need both denominators on the same line (7/6 vs 5/4). Section E closes with three word problems that ask students to translate clock-style descriptions of a number line into an answered fraction.
The answer key on page 6 lists every assessed item in section order. Section A and B entries include the equivalent simpler form in parentheses (e.g. 2/6 is equivalent to 1/3) so students learn that two different-looking fractions can name the same point on a number line.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box aloud as a whole-class warm-up. On a teacher whiteboard, draw a 0-to-1 line, divide into thirds, and label 1/3 and 2/3 explicitly.
Have students complete Section A independently as a 5-minute warm-up; review answers together before moving on.
Use Section B to introduce improper fractions. Emphasize that the denominator stays the same; the numerator grows past it.
Use Section C for guided practice in pairs – have one student count the jumps aloud while the other places the dot.
Assign Section D as independent practice; circulate to catch students who compare fractions by ‘bigger numerator means bigger fraction’ (a common error this section is designed to surface).
Finish with Section E as a homework or exit-ticket; problem 27 is a teachable equivalence moment if students disagree.
Use the answer key on page 6 for student self-check, small-group review, or aide spot-check.
