Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Fraction word problems put fraction operations into the contexts where students will use them: cooking, distance, sharing food, and dividing space. This worksheet builds fluency across three common cases: adding fractions with the same denominator, subtracting fractions with the same denominator, and multiplying a unit fraction by a whole number.

A reference box at the top of page 1 demonstrates the strategy on a non-reused example: 2/9 + 4/9 = 6/9, which simplifies to 2/3. Denominator 9 is not used in any assessed item, so the worked fractions stay independent of the rest of the worksheet. The example reinforces the habit of simplifying the answer when the numerator and denominator share a common factor.

Page 3 is a complete answer key that shows the operation line and the simplified answer for every problem, organized by section in a compact two-column grid. The answer key shows both the unsimplified result and the simplified form (for example, 4/8 = 1/2) so students can check whether they remembered to simplify.

How to Use This Lesson

Warm up by reading the reference box aloud and modeling the simplification step on the whiteboard.

Use Section A for guided practice on adding and subtracting fractions with the same denominator; flag the multiplication problem (problem 4) so students see the operation change.

Use Section B for independent practice across mixed operations.

Remind students to simplify their final answer whenever possible.

Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check or aide spot-check.
