Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Four-digit column arithmetic is the next step after three-digit work and the foundation for whole-number computation across the upper-elementary grades. This worksheet practices addition and subtraction side by side so students see that the column procedure is the same idea in both directions – carry to the next column when adding, regroup from the next column when subtracting.

A reference box at the top of page 1 walks through one full add example (2356 + 1487) and one full subtract example (5234 – 1678) one column at a time. Several Section C problems chain-borrow across multiple columns (for example, 9012 – 3456 and 7000 – 3526) to give students practice with the trickiest regrouping case.

Page 3 is a complete answer key with the operation line for every item, organized by section in a compact two-column grid for easy student self-check or aide spot-check.

How to Use This Lesson

Warm up by reading the reference box aloud and modeling both examples on a whiteboard, column by column.

Use Section A (horizontal mixed) for guided pair-share; have students rewrite each problem as a vertical stack.

Use Section B (vertical addition) for independent practice; remind students to write the carry digit small above the next column.

Use Section C (vertical subtraction) for independent practice; flag the chain-borrow problems (any subtraction with a 0 in the top number’s middle column) as worth extra attention.

Use Section D (word problems) as a 5-minute exit ticket.

Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check or aide spot-check.
