Lesson Overview
Locating Points on the Coordinate Plane
The coordinate plane is formed by two perpendicular number lines: the horizontal x-axis and the vertical y-axis. Their intersection is the origin (0, 0). Every point on the plane can be described by an ordered pair (x, y). The lesson teaches students to read coordinates and plot points in all four quadrants.
The six-page lesson walks through the structure of the coordinate plane with worked examples of locating and plotting ordered pairs. Students complete 20 practice problems and check their work using the answer key on page 6.
How to Use This Lesson
1. Introduce the coordinate plane: axes, origin, and quadrants (pages 1–2). Show how ordered pairs describe a location.
2. Practice locating and plotting points together (pages 3–4). Include points in all four quadrants.
3. Assign the 20 practice problems (page 5) independently. Review answers using the key on page 6.
