About this worksheet

A factor of a number divides into it evenly, and a multiple is what you get when you multiply a number by a whole number. Factors are usually smaller than the number; multiples are usually larger. The same pair can be related both ways: 3 is a factor of 12, and 12 is a multiple of 3. This worksheet teaches students to tell the two apart.

Section A gives eight questions of the form ‘Is the first number a factor or a multiple of the second?’ (Is 4 a factor or multiple of 8? Is 20 a factor or multiple of 5?), balanced four factors and four multiples. The reference box teaches the difference with factors of 12 and multiples of 3 examples and the divides-versus-times test.

Section B is short-answer. Students contrast factors and multiples, list the factors of 10, write the first four multiples of 4, and explain the both-ways relationship of 6 and 18. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill connects to primes, fractions, and least common multiple.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and list the factors of 12 and the first multiples of 3 together.

Complete Section A independently – have students ask ‘does it divide in (factor) or is it the number times something (multiple)?’

Work Section B item 4 together: 6 divides 18 (a factor) and 18 is 6 x 3 (a multiple).

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Prime and Composite Numbers Worksheet or the Multiplication Facts 6-12 Worksheet for a number-theory mini-unit.
