About this worksheet
Fact families are the bridge between adding and subtracting. When a student sees that 3 + 4 = 7, 4 + 3 = 7, 7 – 3 = 4, and 7 – 4 = 3 all describe the same relationship, the inverse-operation idea clicks – one memorized addition fact unlocks the matching subtraction. This worksheet builds that flexibility in four short sections.
Section A gives four number triples (2,4,6; 1,7,8; 4,5,9; 6,3,9) and asks the student to write all four facts in each family. Section B is fill-in-the-blank practice on a single family (4, 5, 9) where the student completes each of the four equations. Together the two sections build pattern recognition before the student is asked to find a missing number on their own.
Section C gives only the two smaller numbers in a family and asks the student to find the big number AND write the four facts (e.g. “3, 4, ___” -> 7, then the four facts). Section D is three word problems that apply the fact-family structure to marbles, ducks, and crayons – including one missing-addend problem (the dull crayons). The reference box at the top of page 1 teaches the procedure with a single worked example (3, 5, 8) that does NOT appear in any assessed item, keeping the worksheet reference-independent. Page 3 is a compact answer key.
How to Use This Lesson
Read the reference box; have a student name the four facts for 3, 5, 8 before starting Section A.
Do Section A independently; review item 4 (which has the larger number first – 6, 3, 9) as a class so students see that the BIG number is what matters, not the order given.
Section B is a guided drill on one family; circulate to catch students who write the same fact twice.
Section C asks students to find the missing big number BEFORE writing the facts – emphasize that step.
Section D word problems can be done in pairs; share strategies for the missing-addend problem (item 3, dull crayons).
