About this worksheet
Expanded form is the bridge between recognizing a number and reasoning about it. Once students can write 2,365 as 2,000 + 300 + 60 + 5, they have the foundation for multi-digit addition, subtraction, rounding, and comparing numbers.
A reference box at the top of page 1 walks through the worked example 4,267 = 4,000 + 200 + 60 + 7 digit by digit. The example shows that a digit’s value comes from its position, and that a zero in any place is simply left out of the sum.
Page 3 is a complete answer key that lists every expanded form and every standard form, organized by section in a compact two-column grid for fast student self-check or aide spot-check.
How to Use This Lesson
Warm up by reading the reference box aloud and modeling the worked example on a whiteboard, digit by digit.
Use Section A (standard to expanded) for guided pair-share; have students name each place value aloud.
Use Section B (expanded to standard) for independent practice; remind students that a missing place value is a zero.
Use Section C (mixed) to check whether students can move freely between forms.
Use Section D (word problems) as a 5-minute exit ticket.
Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check or aide spot-check.
