Lesson Overview

About this worksheet

Every whole number is even or odd. An even number splits into two equal groups with none left over; an odd number always has one left over. The quick test is the last digit: even numbers end in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8, and odd numbers end in 1, 3, 5, 7, or 9. This worksheet gives young students practice using that rule on numbers big and small.

Section A lists eight numbers (16, 23, 50, 89, and larger ones like 208 and 461) and asks students to label each even or odd, balanced four and four. Including three-digit numbers shows that the last-digit rule works no matter how big the number is. The reference box teaches the rule with 30 and 47 examples not reused as items.

Section B is short-answer. Students explain the last-digit rule, classify 100, write their own even and odd numbers, and reason about splitting 9 stickers. Page 3 is a complete answer key. The skill is foundational for number sense and later work on factors and multiples.

How to Use This Lesson

Read the reference box aloud and circle the last digit of a few numbers together.

Complete Section A independently – have students look only at the ones digit.

Work Section B item 4 together: 9 stickers cannot split evenly, so 9 is odd.

Use the answer key on page 3 for self-check or teacher review.

Pair with the Skip Counting Worksheet or the Place Value to Hundreds Worksheet for a number-sense mini-unit.
