About this worksheet

Decimal word problems test whether students can move fluently between operations when the context dictates the choice. This worksheet sequences four operations – addition, subtraction, multiplication by a whole number, and division by a whole number – across money totals, distance, weight, gasoline use, and time differences.

A reference box at the top of page 1 demonstrates the multiply-by-a-whole strategy on a non-reused example: 5 pencils at $0.65 each is 5 × $0.65 = $3.25. The example reinforces lining up the decimal point and bringing it straight down into the product.

Section B introduces multi-step decimal problems: problem 5 requires recognizing that 300 km is 3 times 100 km before multiplying by the rate, and problem 7 requires multiplying first and then subtracting from the bill amount. Problem 8 (water tank divided over 6 days) gives a clean quotient (15.0 ÷ 6 = 2.5) so students can focus on the division procedure with decimals.

Page 3 is a complete answer key that shows the operation line and the answer for every problem, organized by section in a compact two-column grid.

How to Use This Lesson

Warm up by reading the reference box aloud and modeling the multiplication on the whiteboard with the decimal point shown moving straight down into the product.

Use Section A for guided practice across the four basic operations; remind students that money problems usually want two decimal places in the answer.

Use Section B for independent practice; flag problems 5 and 7 as multi-step.

Use problem 8 as a clean division practice item (15.0 ÷ 6 = 2.5).

Use the answer key on page 3 for student self-check or aide spot-check.
